On my first Halloween as a mom, I reminisced about my own youth. A few short years later I had already turned into a Halloween curmudgeon, probably because I couldn't talk Annabella out of dressing up like a princess even though I really, really wanted her to be a super hero.
This year Annabella wants to be a black cat and we're working on making the costume with a leotard, tights, feather boa, and some face paint, so thing are looking up.
For the boys I'm going to make use of our extra Costco diaper and wipe boxes to turn them into robots. I'm planning on spray painting the boxes silver. Not sure if they'll get any additional ornamentation. Wearing a silver box might be all they need. I considered getting some Thomas the Train costumes and attaching lead pencils or lead weights to them, but I'm just not sure people are ready to laugh about that just yet.
What's your costume game plan this year?

I tend to go a bit overboard on costumes, because I remember fondly some of the great costumes my mom made for me. So I've made M's and C's costumes every year. But, while M tends to choose elaborate costumes, she also wears them 2yrs in a row. And her first Halloween, she was a lion, which we were able to rework for C last year.
So this year, C will be a dalmatian, and M will be a peacock again (thank heavens her daddy is an engineer to design the tail).

My blond one-year-old is going to be Supergirl. $6 in red and yellow fabric and a $2 on clearance blue onesie. And a couple stolen hours at the sewing machine. My only hang-up is the red boots; I'm thinking red converse high-tops.
I, too, dread the princess costumes that are sure to be in my future.

I live in Belgium and Halloween is something new for us: we only celebrate it since 10 years...
I work in a school and tuesday, I asked the children what are the Halloween costumes they would like to dress on October 31st.
No child told me that he wanted to dress a cow-boy, Superman, princess, gypsy or something else costume for their Halloween Night.
They all want to dress... scary and bloody Halloween costumes! Number one costume: Scream's murderer costume :-(
Will interview my +40 years old friends on what they would like to dress as Halloween costumes ;-)))
I think I will have more different costumes to talk about.

Last year was great, we did a Star Wars theme, with my son as Obi Wan and my twin girls as Princess Leia and "Baby Yoda" as they like to say.
This year it's more traditional, with Darth Vadar, Snow White and Tinkerbell.

We have been trying to convince my 6yo for a couple of years to be a super hero, but she doesn't want anything to do with it. She has been a dragon, an astronaut (my husband made some cool oxygen tanks for her back out of foil wrapped pop bottles), a tiger, a banana (that was way too complicated) and a ghost. She is talking this year about wanting to be a princess or witch, but I told it her that it would be cooler and more fun to put the word "alien" in front of those costume ideas. I just posted some photos on my site: www.meagneato.com

First off Megan let me tell you how much I love the idea of the "leaded" costume. That is such a wonderful idea!
Last year my eldest wanted to be TinkerBell so we did all of our costumes around a Peter Pan theme with Daddy as Captain Hook, Mommy as Wendy, and little sister as Peter. This year the girls decided they wanted to be superheros so we have one Super Girl and one Wonder Woman. The new baby will probably be Jack Jack from the Incredibles because how many baby superheros are there? Mommy and daddy will go civilian this year since we will probably be exhausted and barely up to trick or treating since baby is due any day now.

The past few years, my daughters have used their dance recital costumes from the previous years. That was fine with me, since we didn't have to spring for costumes.
This year, my 9-year-old wants to go as an iPod Classic, so we're going to paint a cardboard box for her to walk in. I imagine it'll need some kind of shoulder straps on the inside. It'll be playing a video of her face.

My 5 yr old son found a costume catalog that came in the mail and scoped out the James (of Thomas trains) costume so that is what he wants. Kinda lame in my opinion, but you know what? I will be in New Orleans on my first trip sans husband and child on Halloween and I am so excited! so whatever he wants to wear this year is fine with me!

Lyra will be just shy of four months old on Hallowen, but we are going trick-or-treating with her 5-year-old cousin. I am too post partum and uncrafty to make a costume, so she will be going as a pea pod, 'cuz I fell in love with this: http://tinyurl.com/2n82kq

One cool thing about some costumes is their alternative uses. We always scoop something up on sale in early November that is fun winter wear.
Last year, our 18 month old had pants that originally were the bottom half of a cow costume. Paired with a sweater the black and white fur cow pants were a toasty warm and a real show stopper. People would constantly ask us where we got them. They were shocked when we said they were part of a halloween costume. Little did they know we only paid $2.00 for them.

Damn! I haven't thought of anything. Maybe I'll have to get mom working on that.

Last year, we just put the kids in an orange t-shirt that said different things. One I remember was "I'm scarier without a costume."
As for doing the Thomas the Train, I'd just slap a sticker, or draw wheels on the costco boxes that you were going to paint silver.

We didn't do Halloween when I was a kid after my kindergarten year. I was a witch, matching costume with the neighbor girl. The non-Halloween started when we were going to a super conservative church, but I think it stuck because my dad's so cheap.
I can't wait to do the Halloween thing with kids, decked out to the hilt and the house decorated to make up for what I missed.

LOL Megan. I love the lead idea!
(I've fallen behind in reading you, thus the late comment)

This idea is very good but anyway I do not like the main meaning of Halloween, what I like is the parties
and enjoy the life
