So glad to see the bit about Starfall. An elementary teacher friend recommended that site, when M was about 3. I figured she wasn't ready for the reading part, and she already knew her letters, but I went to check it out one night. She heard the site start up, and she came right over to see. She loves going there now.
She is now reading at about a second grade level, according to her PreK teacher. I credit it mostly to her own interest, but Starfall is a great resource for kids who want to learn to read and parents who don't have the expertise in teaching phonics and reading skills (like me).

For the Irish listener who asked about manga links, he can check out www.tokyopop.com, www.shonenjump.com, and www.shojobeat.com. All three sites have manga chapters that can be read online. Netcomics (www.netcomics.com) will give you the first chapter free, and then it's only .25 a chapter after that. For Jpop, check out the podcast No Borders, No Race (www.tokyopop.com/omnistry).

Orkut (owned by Google) has become host to countless profiles filled with stolen images of children that were posted by their parents on Flickr (owned by Yahoo!). While the image that I sent you is filled with comments from an angry mother who has taken the extreme position, it's quite the problem for even some of us calmer parents who had had images stolen. To get them removed is an extremely time-consuming process that Google has in place, frustrating because in the time it takes to point out that the babies on there are not the actual people that match the profile (and are certainly not out for dating - which is what these sites often say), more profiles are being created with the stolen pictures - pictures now stolen from the Orkut sites.
To further complicate matters, Google/Orkut wants us to, before reporting it to them, ask the fake profiles ourselves to kindly remove the images - but the sites are being run by Brazilian teens and tweens and most of us do not speak Portuguese.
I thought it was information that should be spread to all digital loving parents, a warning. And I also hoped that the more people who knew about it, the more pressure Google may feel to change their policies to be more user-friendly.
